Nectarine Mango
Wait, you mean they couldn't come up with a better name than Nectarine Mango?
I'm all for cross-pollinized fruit. BRING ON THE SCIENTIFICALLY ALTERED FRUIT!! But please, give me a little something on the name.
Take dogs for instance. It's not a Labrador Poodle. It's a Labradoodle. Not just a Beagle Pug... a Puggle. You can break down and decipher where some other hybrids came from: Maltipoo, Cockapoo, Bichon Poo (OK, enough with the poo).
So why couldn't we give the Nectarine Mango a better name? Nectaman. Go-Nectar. Mantarine.
Floyd Zaiger had it right. In case you aren't familiar with his name, he's the guy who brought us such cross-pollinized classics as Aprium, Nectaplum, Nectarot, Peacotum, and Pluot. Floyd certainly would have named the Nectarine Mango something a little more snazzy, more intriguing, more... succulent.
So what of the Nectarine Mango? Well, it looks like a greenish-yellow nectarine, and it tastes like a mango. That is, if you find a tremendous difference between the taste of a yellow nectarine and the taste of a mango... it's subtle, but a slightly sweeter and firmer flesh, not as juicy as a nectarine, but just as delicious. You can also eat the skin, unlike a mango, and it's a whole lot easier to cut up and prepare (my usual mango adventures end up looking like something out of a cartoon horror film).
The season ends soon - they'll be in stores for another week or so.
Nectarine Mangos available at Whole Foods.

what is this fruit of which you speak?
I'm horrible at cutting mangos. Maybe I should try one of these.
Why didn't they call it a nectango? That's more fun to say than nectarine mango! :P
NECTANGO - good one!! Robyn, you certainly have a career in hybrid fruit naming.
Cool! I love mango's but I am so tired of eating around the seed! But if they're gonna charge $5.99 per Nectango...I'd rather buy my 59 cent mangos over at Food 4 Less.
Hi Colleen - I love it! Our "Boyz", are mutts too, though not mutts of the fruity kind.
Sammy is a Schnoodle - Schnauzer-Poodle.
Frankie is a Schnauson - Schnauzer-Bichon.
Here's a toast to all the mutts, of a phylums....
cc,
you approve of this crossbreeding of fruits huh...
wow.... now you've been officially placed on ethical probation...
just remember, 3 strikes and you're eddie lin..
I scored a box of mangos at the 99 Ranch market for $3.50 and was so happy with the find! Too bad my mango cream pie turned out to be more like mango cream pudding. LOL! (on a sidenote, I just read in my baker's book that mangos need to be cooked otherwise they don't do well with gelatin and won't solidify. DOH!) Great seeing you on Sunday! Loved your pee-wees and other sweet goodies! ;)
Wine + German Beer + German Sausages = No good. I'm so tired haha.
Colleen, thanks for your comment on Diary of a Dilettante. We seem to have similar interests in food (I have done entries on Famima, Beard Papa, Pink Berry of course, and a few other food related places (though my blog is not exclusively devoted to food). I'm afraid I won't boost your traffic much as I only have about 25 subscribers...but a girl can dream. I'm inspired by the seemingly large readership of your blog and will be a frequent visitor from now on.
Saw this fruit at the store today (a year later than your blog posting) and was very curious. Not knowing how to eat it I googled the subject and got your blog. Questions answered! Very much agree on the dumb name - how about Mangarino?! Me likey! Happy 4th!
